  • A Specialist Orthodontist is a Doctor who will initially have trained as a Dentist but who will then undergo three years of specialist postgraduate Doctoral training in the field of orthodontics on top of this. Once qualified the Orthodontist is able to diagnose and treat complex and challenging cases which can go beyond applying braces, and can include the ability to correct a patient’s jaws to ensure they are in alignment with the facial profile. After they qualify they continue to undergo rigorous training to remain current with developments in Orthodontics, as well as the latest associated technologies and practices.
  • Before a Dentist can undergo the difficult and highly sought postgraduate training, they need to demonstrate experience of working in restorative dentistry, and maxillo-facial surgery
  • General Dentists are also Doctors and their training is also difficult and extensive and they can provide many different treatments, such as. check-ups, fillings, root canal work and crowns. There are some dental practices who do offer teeth straightening, but a General Dentist
    will usually have undergone less formal training and may have less experience in Orthodontics than a dedicated Specialist Orthodontist. The nurses and therapists who support the Orthodontists often have more specialist experience, and training as well.

  • R R Mahesh obtained his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) qualification in India in 1994. After working in General Practice for a year he then moved to the UK to undertake specialist post-graduate training in Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery and obtained his Fellowship in
    Dental Surgery (FDSRCS) from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1997. He continued to work in the speciality of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery before commencing his orthodontic training in Edinburgh in 2000.
  • R R Mahesh obtained his MSc with Distinction from the University of Edinburgh in 2002; he was the first ever candidate to be awarded distinction in the 10 years of the course being conducted by the University of Edinburgh.
  • R R Mahesh gained his double Membership in Orthodontics qualifications from both the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England in 2003.
  • When not at work RR Mahesh enjoys time travelling around the world visiting many exotic places with his family.
